Unfortunately the kit did not have a 4.5 x 1.5 main spar, so I had to use my trusty sheet balsa cutter to cut my own, not a big deal, but it was a little disappointing that the kit was short of some materials.

I'll give this 24 hours to dry solid and then on to shaping/sanding and adding the 0.8mm sheet balsa leading edge.
The 0.8mm sheet balsa on the top of the leading edge took a bit of effort to cut to the right size. I also had to patch this later on as I put my finger through it while sanding the leading edge down. I am quite pleased with the end result, I'm hoping the left wing will be less problematic now I know how delicate the leading edge is.
The wing ribs are rather thin (0.5mm) so one has to be very careful when cutting and shaping them. Next step will be shaping and sanding the wing...
I've refrained from opening the kit and starting it until I completed my Wakefield, which took far longer to finish than I expected. Now that model is completed, I can at at last get cracking on this fun little plane.

I normally really enjoy West Wings kits (they make nice presents, hint hint), their models are well designed, easy and interesting to build and the kits contain quality plans and materials. This model has a 24.5" wingspan and is complete with appropriately coloured blue and silver tissue and decals.

The design looks very promising with high wing mount, large wing area and hopefully low weight, it should be stable flier. Although I'm going to keep to the rubber powered design, apparently some folk have converted it to electric power, so that looks like an interesting option to try out if I attempt a second build. Hopefully I can get this one built before Summer 2016 arrives!Colin Ian Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06458723239721015750noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430797984482664719.post-42684670423995136492016-01-30T18:07:00.001+00:002016-01-30T18:07:59.259+00:00Wakefield ready to fly!It has been 6 months since I last worked on my Wakefield and today I got around to finally completing the kit. I just needed to shape the nose block, fit the propeller and add the dowels to fix the wings into position. I rather pleased with the outcome. I just need to get this trimmed and flying.. so roll on Spring!
I had to re-do a couple of panels because they weren't quite perfect, so it took a little longer than I intended. I also had to be careful as I had just 3 sheets of white tissue and this was only just enough to cover the plane.

Next step is to clean up the edges and then apply two coats 50/50 mix of cellulose thinners and cellulose dope to do the final tissue shrink.
The wire provided with the kit was tricky to bend and I was avoiding starting it. Instead of fixing the undercarriage to the fuselage, I instead chose to slide the wire into brass tubing inset into the fuselage. I added two height settings to allow me to tweak the centre of gravity.

The tubing allows me to remove the undercarriage for easy transportation and storage. The fit is snug enough to ensure the wire frame does not pop out, but I may also hold the left and right sides in place using a rubber band if required.
The centre is packed with a plethora of machines from the 1950s onwards and has an excellent collection of 8 bit micros from the 1980s.
We had to see if it could easily be made and if it would fly.

Out of some 1/16" sheet balsa scraps I cut some 1/16" x 1/16", 1/16" x 3/16" strips for wing ribs and leading and trailing edges. I cut 4 lengths of 1/16" x 1/4" x 10cm strips that we laminated to make a rigid stick fuselage. We used some scrap tissue for wing and tail covering and by the end of the weekend we had a chuck glider that just needed a small amount of Blu-Tak for a nose weight and it flew perfectly!
The main construction phase is now complete, I just need to finish off the wire landing gear and the rubber end mounting fixtures.

The kit supplied enough balsa for the fuselage without the diagonal bracing, so I used some spare 1/8" sheet to cut some balsa strip and add the bracing in as additional strengtheners as suggested by the original plans.

The fuselage was relatively easy to build, but I did have to rig up a few jigs to ensure I got a perfectly square and rigid box frame.
I need to add in some central strengtheners, do some more sanding and add in few triangular fillets, but the hard part is now complete. The angle of the photo made the ribs look a bit distorted for some reason, I can assure you that they are set correctly. The wingtips sport a 4" dihedral, but for a 12-13" wingtip isn't too severe as it first sounds.

I now need to find a large board to start constructing the rather long fuselage... onwards and upwards!Colin Ian Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06458723239721015750noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430797984482664719.post-45249084648958826622015-02-01T17:02:00.002+00:002015-02-01T17:02:37.450+00:00Accurately cutting balsa stripCutting balsa sheet by hand using a metal ruler and a sharp modelling knife has always proven to be tricky to get the perfect cut of balsa strip. One of the presents I received at Christmas was this simple and yet very effective balsa stripper. The width of the cut can be easily and accurately adjusted by turning the dial. The knife blade can be adjusted to the required depth and cutting angle to get the perfect cut.
This rubber powered plane apparently has achieved 28 minute flights, so I think I may need to find a larger field to fly it in once I've constructed it.

We believe he made this some time in the late 1930's. We have no idea of the size, but it does look rather large.
The kit supplied enough red tissue for me to cover the wing and tail surfaces and I chose to cover the fuselage in white.

I used a very watered down mix of PVA wood glue to attach the tissue and when dried, I shrunk the tissue with a fine water spray. I left this to dry overnight and then I applied two coats of a 50/50 mix of cellulose thinners and cellulose dope to shrink and tissue further. Now all I need to do is wait until the Spring to give this a test flight!

The 3/32" sheet balsa fillets to the nose were surprisingly accurately printed and they fitted perfectly first go. Normally I need to tweak these with a small amount of sanding, but this kit was spot on.

To ensure I had a rigid box fuselage, I constructed rectangular frames in the under-wing sections to give me a near perfect square frame to start with. The rest of the frame was constructed with carefully cut 1/8" cross pieces and some temporary scaffolding to hold the frame square during the drying process. The final box frame turned out warp free, which was a relief.Colin Ian Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06458723239721015750noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2430797984482664719.post-57183475960775321882014-11-30T14:57:00.003+00:002014-11-30T14:57:50.417+00:00Miss Canada Senior, Fuselage Part 1I've now moved onto constructing the fuselage of the Miss Canada Senior. The original kit did not have longerons long enough for the bottom of the fuselage and required splicing two 1/8" strips together, however, I cut my own from 1/8" sheet balsa so I didn't have to do the splicing.

I also added extra diagonal strengtheners in on the nose and under-wing sections of the fuselage to add more rigidity; the extra weight was minimal.
Next step is to put these together to complete the box fuselage.
However, this weekend I found enough time to sand down the tail and wing surfaces and finally glue the main wings together.

My main quibble with the main wing design is that the left and right wings really require more strengthening when joining them together with the required dihedral, and I am still wondering if I need to put ply supports in just to make sure the wing is fully rigid at the centre.

I need to just to add the triangular wing fillets to ensure the wings won't warp and then they are ready for covering. I think I will do the wing tips, tail and stabilizer in red with the rest of the wing and fuselage in white. We gave the West Wings Sapphire (in yellow) and West Wings Aries (in white and blue) for a quick spin. My 11 year old son took some photos and video of the occasion...
..after a lot of trimming, we got a short flight. I didn't want to over-wind the rubber as it was starting to show signs of ageing.

So, fortunately we didn't destroy any of the aircraft today which is always a bonus to some successful flying. Next time I'll equip the planes with some new rubber so I can crank up the winding to get some longer duration flights...

To make a change, I decided my next kit would be a large free flight aircraft, this time an EasyBuilt 36" wingspan vintage Miss Canada Senior. This is a typical box fuselage rubber powered model with a rugged and rather chunky design. I'm not sure about the aesthetics, but I think the flying performance may show some promise.
The balsa appears to be well graded and chosen carefully, the only minor quibble was the slight damage to the tip of the propeller, but I am sure I can work around that. I will report back as I get to grips with the construction of this vintage gem.Colin Ian Kinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06458723239721015750noreply@blogger.com2
